Film Review: Repo! The Genetic Opera

Title: Repo! The Genetic Opera
Release Date: 9th March 2009
Rating: 15
Principal Cast: Alexa Vega, Anthony Head, Paris Hilton, Sarah Brightman, Paul Sorvino

I challenge you all to name a film that has a more eclectic cast than this.  And no, Rocky Horror doesn't count.

Repo! is an opera in the traditional sense; most of the dialogue is sung (with varying degrees of success given the cast list.) And like most operas it doesn't have a happy ending, or beginning or really middle.  It's not a happy film is what I mean but then that doesn't mean it isn't a good film.

It is a cult film.  Very much in the vein of Rocky Horror but somehow less tacky.  Now maybe that's because Repo! takes itself seriously and actually has a decent plot amongst all the blood and gore (the producers also produced Saw, self explanatory really.)  Or maybe it's because there are some genuinely likeable characters, not many but there are a few.

Yes, some of the songs are cheesy but they will all get stuck in your head and you will find yourself randomly singing lines now and again even if you haven't seen the film for ages.  I can't really say they're bad songs, considering you have the likes of Paul Sorvino and Sarah Brightman singing, but there are some cringe-worthy moments that really just add to the rather strange charm of Repo!

So, is Repo! good?  Well, it depends, if you like cheesy gore then yes.  If you like a few of the cast, yes.  If you want something deep and meaningful then what are you even doing thinking about this film?  It's what I like to call a marmite film.  You'll either love it or you'll hate it, the only thing I can do is suggest you try it first.  Here's the trailer:
