T.V Review- Doctor Who: Hide

Title: Hide
Air Date: 20th April 2013
Writer: Neil Cross

Now this is a welcome return to the way Doctor Who used to scare the hell of you.  Subtlety.

Hide is part Woman in Black and part Sixth Sense.  In other words, scary.  For the most part at least.  It's a classic understated horror, jump scares are few and far between and there's no long rambling backstory right at the start.  There is a backstory, of course there is, but it's weaved into the plot.

There are a lot of nods to continuity here.  Clara's slightly antagonistic relationship with the TARDIS, Metebelis three (which is pronounced wrongly), even a nod to Army of Ghosts.  I can't really say too much without spoiling the reveal but I can say this:

Yes it's scary, yes it's a horror but at the same time it's a love story.  It's got heart, it's got banter and the phrase 'Blood is thicker than water' plays a part. (Nobody says it but it's hinted at.)

Clara is still as mysterious as ever but now she's beginning to get the hang of travelling with the Doctor, she's asking the right questions and she's challenging him.  Their relationship is still confusing (even though he's clearly delighted with her) but I have a feeling things will come to a head soon.
